Post spine surgery: home physiotherapy

Recovery after spinal surgery.

How physiotherapy helps

Rehabilitation after spine surgery (discectomy, spinal fusion) requires special sensitivity and expertise. Home physiotherapy usually starts 2–4 weeks after surgery, depending on surgeon\u02bcs instructions. The therapist teaches you proper biomechanical movements (logrolling for getting up, no spinal flexion/rotation in early weeks), and starts a progressive mobilization program. They also work on respiratory re-education, deep stabilizer activation (transversus abdominis, multifidus), and gradual return to daily activities. At 3–6 months, the patient has usually safely returned to all activities. Proper rehabilitation is crucial to avoid symptom recurrence and achieve optimal surgical outcome.
