Vertigo / Dizziness: home physiotherapy

Balance disorders and vestibular rehabilitation.

How physiotherapy helps

Vertigo and dizziness are particularly disturbing symptoms affecting daily life. The most common cause is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), due to displacement of microcrystals in the inner ear. Vestibular rehabilitation physiotherapy is the most effective treatment. During home physiotherapy, a specialized therapist performs canalith repositioning maneuvers (Epley, Semont) for immediate relief from BPPV — usually 1–3 sessions suffice. For other types of vertigo, adaptation, substitution, and balance re-education exercises are applied. According to studies, vestibular rehabilitation has an 85–95% success rate for BPPV and is considered first-line treatment.
