Ankle sprain: home physiotherapy

Recovery from ankle sprain.

How physiotherapy helps

Ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries but is very often underestimated. 40% of sprains develop into chronic instability if not properly treated. Home physiotherapy ideally starts from the first days with the PEACE & LOVE principle (replacing the old RICE). The therapist applies manual therapy for the joint, mobility exercises, gradual strengthening, and crucially — proprioception training with equipment like balance boards. Proprioception is what is lost after a sprain and causes recurrent sprains. With a proper 4–6 week program, the patient fully returns to activities and is protected from future sprains.

Common symptoms

  • Pain and swelling in the ankle
  • Difficulty bearing weight on the foot
  • Bruising around the ankle
  • Sensation of instability
  • Limited motion
